This image of Francis has looked down over the basilica that bears his name for 800 years. It has survived because true fresco isn't painted onto plaster — the pigment is worked into it while still wet, bonding with the stone as it cures. The image doesn't sit on the wall. It is the wall.

The family business Francis walked away from sold the finest cloth in Umbria — silks and wools imported from France, the luxury goods of his day. He gave it all up for burlap and bare feet.
